Studies on the Physiology of Light Action. Iv. Light Enhancement of Auxin-induced Growth in Green Peas.

چکیده
In the first paper of this series (3), it was demonstrated that the auxininduced growth in length of sub-apical sections of etiolated pea stems -is greatly inhibited by light. This light-growth inhibition was subsequently (1, 2) interpreted in terms of a riboflavin-sensitized photoinactivation of indoleacetic acid (IAA). Such an interpretation derives support from the fact that light, concurrent with its inhibition of growth, increases the rate of disappearance of IAA from the external medium. In the course of similar experiments with stem sections of light-grown peas, we noticed that light enhances, rather than inhibits, the auxin-induced growth. This response was unexpected and of such great magnitude that it was considered desirable to investigate it more fully. The present paper describes the phenomenon in some detail and presents an explanation of it which seems consistent with all the facts at our disposal. The simple section growth test herein described may, incidentally, be of some use to those interested in utilizing green tissues for auxin or herbicide studies.

Gibberellin-auxin interaction in pea stem elongation.
Joint application of gibberellic acid and indole-3-acetic acid to excised stem sections, terminal cuttings, and decapitated plants of a green dwarf pea results in a markedly synergistic growth response to these hormones. Synergism in green tall pea stem sections is comparatively small, although growth is kinetically indistinguishable from similarly treated dwarf sections.Gibberellin-induced gro...
متن کاملPINOID AGC kinases are necessary for phytochrome-mediated enhancement of hypocotyl phototropism in Arabidopsis.
Several members of the AGCVIII kinase subfamily, which includes PINOID (PID), PID2, and WAVY ROOT GROWTH (WAG) proteins, have previously been shown to phosphorylate PIN-FORMED (PIN) auxin transporters and control the auxin flow in plants. PID has been proposed as a key component of the phototropin signaling pathway that induces phototropic responses, although the responses were not significantl...
متن کاملMagnitude and Kinetics of Stem Elongation Induced by Exogenous Indole-3-Acetic Acid in Intact Light-Grown Pea Seedlings.
Exogenously applied indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) strongly promoted stem elongation over the long term in intact light-grown seedlings of both dwarf (cv Progress No. 9) and tall (cv Alaska) peas (Pisum sativum L.), with the relative promotion being far greater in dwarf plants. In dwarf seedlings, solutions of IAA (between 10-4 and 10-3 M), when continuously applied to the uppermost two internodes ...
متن کاملOn the Relationship between Extracellular pH and the Growth of Excised Pea Stem Segments.
Studies with stem segments of peas (Pisum sativum L. var. Alaska) suggest that the pH of the medium bathing elongating tissue does not always reflect intramural (cell wall) conditions or that pH is not a controlling factor in elongation. Peeled, green segments, and peeled or nonpeeled etiolated segments appear to regulate the pH of their bathing medium causing it to become acidified with or wit...
متن کاملGibberellins and Light Inhibition of Stem Growth in Peas.
Light-induced inhibition of stem growth is a common phenomenon in plants. Particularly well investigated is the case of peas, Pisum sativum, mainly thanks to the work of Lockhart. Lockhart showed that growth of Alaska peas, a tall variety, was retarded when plants were transferred from darkness to low-intensity light but that, after a period of inhibition, the plants resumed growth at a rate eq...
